Chimpanzee Movie Review

chimpanzee-movieBy far, the biggest draws for me in terms of documentaries, are films about nature and animals. Back when the Planet Earth series was released, my husband and I quickly bought the entire set and sat glued to the television until we had watched every moment of each disc. I had a similar reaction when I watch other nature documentaries – including March of the Penguins, which I have probably watched a dozen times. I am continually amazed and greatly moved by the moments that are captured on these extraordinary films, so I was thrilled to have the opportunity to review the Disneynature film, Chimpanzee.

The Story of Chimpanzee:

The name says it all: Chimpanzee is about chimpanzees. I have yet to meet anyone, child or adult, who doesn’t smile when they see a chimpanzee.  The human-like qualities they possess captivate all ages. Of course there is more to the story than that!

Chimpanzee is a wonderful journey which takes you deep into the African rainforest where you meet Oscar, an adorable young chimp with an entertaining approach to life. The world is a playground for little Oscar and his fellow young chimps who love creating mayhem. They are full of curiosity, with a zest for discovery, joy and a love of mimicking others, and they have some of the most extraordinary personalities in the animal kingdom.

Chimpanzee is filled with stunning hi-definition images that bring you up close and personal as Oscar and his family navigate the complex territory of the forest. It’s an inspiring and life-changing adventure that overflows with courage and charm.

Chimpanzee Movie Review:

As I write this review, I have already watched Chimpanzee a couple of times – once on my own and once with the kids. On the occasion that I watched the film with my kids, I ended up having to turn the film off for a couple of reasons. Firstly, despite the awe I feel when I watch this film, the same level of appreciation isn’t quite there for my kids (though they may grow into this appreciation over time). Secondly, there are a couple of heated, high energy scenes, which I wouldn’t label as inappropriate for children, but they definitely startled my youngest, and he sought refuge behind me until the scene was over.

On the occasion that I was able to watch the film sans kiddos, I was incredibly moved, and yes, I cried more than once. I just loved the story. The story is more than just about chimpanzees, it’s a story of family and the bonds they share. Chimpanzee takes us through the battles of life, as Oscar, a young chimp, deals with the death of his mother, and then nearly dies himself before he is adopted…by an alpha male, something that is extremely rare. Watching Oscar and his new guardian, I was brought to tears as I witnessed the new parent and child bond form between the two.

Chimpanzee – Pros:

  • Chimpanzee is a truly lovely, story that tugs on your heartstrings.
  • Chimpanzee shows the reality of nature.
  • Chimpanzee is rated G – which means that it’s appropriate for many children, though I do caution parents to watch the film prior to letting their children watch it.  Depending on the child, it could be a very emotional experience.

Chimpanzee – Cons:

  • My only “con” is merely a caution – parents should use their own judgement prior to sharing this occasionally intense film with their children.

Would I Buy Chimpanzee?

100x yes!  As I said, I am a sucker for nature and animals and Disneynature’s Chimpanzee is a heart warming story that I think is worth seeing, and should be seen!

Where to Buy Chimpanzee?

Disneynature Chimpanzee can be purchased at most major retailers wherever DVDs and Blu-Rays are sold.

Have you seen Chimpanzee? What did you think of it?
